the church of the dark mother

Bout time

I pray with water in my hands

just in case-

Bout time I see

a future designed

congruent with me.

So you can have my father’s plantation

you can have watch night,

my house coat and every measure of  fabricated cotton.

Bout time, I’d be moving on

Can a poem be vaguely ominous and hopeful at the same time? This one is!

These are the lines that made me stop and pause: “congruent with me” and “every measure of fabricated cotton.” I feel it viscerally, as if to say, I’m done being what I’m expected to be. Don’t plan to stay in the mold of what others might fabricate or engineer for my life. Yes!

Perfect with the picture. Somehow I don’t want her to let go of watch night.
