Homage to My Hips

these hips are big hips
they need space to
move around in.
they don’t fit into little
petty places. these hips
are free hips.
they don’t like to be held back.
these hips have never been enslaved,
they go where they want to go
they do what they want to do.
these hips are mighty hips.
these hips are magic hips.
i have known them
to put a spell on a man and
spin him like a top!

    You go wo-man. Hips talk as much as lips, this is what I know. Thanks for sharing. I wasn’t familiar with her work, but do like it.

    My poetry professor introduced me to this poem, which is just a wonderful celebration of being a woman. The professor showed a clip of Clifton reading the poem ( from a PBS series on poets)– her voice is great.

    I love this line: “these hips have never been enslaved.”

    Doesn’t that say it all? Women are taught to enslave their bodies to male fantasies. Even the most independent women are vulnerable to it.
