  • Hope On My Street: Collaboration with PrayerPower4Today

    April 2nd, 2020

If ever there was such such a thing as Virtual Prayers -Hugs. This is the place to be! https://praypower4today.wordpress.com/ These ladies have become my prayer friends across the internet: There’s Sue giving out her wisdom, Auntie Ruth, delivering virtual booster shots of goodness, might I add, every now and then “a virtual punch in the arm.” Knocking out those bad vibes.

Then there’s Lori, she’s my writing sister, even though we’ve never physically met. I’ve been touched by her soul. Felt the warmth of her being, seen goodness flow from page to page. I’ve been brought back to life with her words. ( go on over – you won’t be disappointed ) Tell them, the kindness sister sent ya! https://praypower4today.wordpress.com/

Thanks Aunt Ruth for the 411 connect on this one. Lori and I share a love for poetry.

I think it’s only fitting for National Poetry Month.

Hope inside the soul has way of living in perilous times. Just when I think I’ve hit my lowest point. Or the bottom breaks from underneath me. There is hope stirring. Even on my street. Where the Bodega has closed, the young boy survived the latest shooting, at the church on 21 street. Recently he came to give his life back to God.

We taste hope just as the first lizard of the morning sticks out her tongue
    You’d not notice.
It takes, as they say, an eye.

to catch the beauty of the blue-winged dragonfly
    Still, spring cannot be contained;
it bursts into bud: daffodils nodding,
blonde and careless, trees shaking down

three-doors down, in a small caddis, vagrant-vacant lot dripping with hunger
    petals, unseasonal flurries. New grass
pokes shyly from the lawn, and smells,
cut, just as it did last summer.

Hope has no fairy tales with rewarding endings
We are not the same, shaken
    as only the most microscopic
    menaces can make us. Yet.
Hopes lives in the lives of shattered things
Nothing can impede the rush to Easter.
The stone rolls away, light as an egg.
destined for rapture, of better things
What lies inside is awaiting us.

poetry by Lori Strawn, (Lori’s words are Italic, mine are bold)

  • Dear Kindness Diary: Believe

    March 27th, 2020

I came here because the the world is always changing. Sometimes I am too.

    Yet and still…

I believe human kindness is a way of putting our arms around the world with compassion in raw un-edited truth that changes the way we write poetry. Kindness, I believe is a moral lifestyle. I’m just trying to do my part in making the world a better place.

I believe kindness-poetry can be felt- chirping off the page. Even now, there’s this gentle nudge that lets’ me know, I’m not alone. That’s kindness.

I believe in kind words that can grab you from the edge of defeat, place you in the center of everything and watch your spirit rise. In the words of Alice Walker, “I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don’t notice it.”

    That’s kindness too.

I believe kind-poetry in this kind-way lift voices out of ghost towns, and ghettos, and prisons- and makes our human experience- transform as to what it has been into visions of hope, and growth and strengthen our mere existence from invisible, margins of living and dying but we all could use kindness as a way of loving ourselves and each other. We could all use human kindness to rebuild extraordinary lives from what has been,

to what human kindness, still must be.

  • Preparing Ourselves For Better… Moral Compass Reset…

    March 24th, 2020

The world will wait, the world will be there when we get back,

breaking from the political pursuit of right and wrong, un-eventful attacks,

silly tit-for tat- who side are you on-

is it this or is it that?

Now we redefine our moral compass -what makes the human great? what makes our punny-life, surpass…

A riot of love anticipates- once our arms were full,

    things that seemed so small

    now it hold these memories,

breaking of friends – sharing a piece of savory bread

    spilling the tea but

hesitating to say the words that we should have said, laying on of hands, touching one with tip of the hand, we’ve taken for granted

love- on love- Loves upping the antic

“Love is patient -Love is kind”

Love can mold new jewels of precious minds

the one that collects our trash is our hero – he keeps our city streets

the one that teaches the child – he/she is our hero- sharpening the minds -imaginary discoveries

the ones that carry sick, working around the clock – the keepers of life and the dying

    the mothers, the students,

    the fathers and friends

    our distant cousins

    our neighbors

    our distant friends

    only love

can make the world go round- turning the world upside right

“love is patient -love is kind”

  • Adding A Little More Hope To it: A Little More Hope Through it…

    March 22nd, 2020

On days like this, where it seems my hope is running low,

    like fuel in a tank

    with no places to go,

cinder blocks, in prison cells start to blow

working out the kinks down in my soul

    Hope is for the featherless

    no tethering ring pole,

    sowing seeds of hope

    germinating little

    pods of things unseen

    Hope for the family

    every sister, every brother

    every cousin, every mother

    Hope for the growing up

    Hope for the growing old

Hope springing out like lavender – wonders to unfold

Hope ripples out like waterfalls reaching into soul,

grander church bells, she even sings her chimes

    Spring in the air,

Spring is in the air, its’ time!

  • The Light is Still Coming:

    March 20th, 2020

    such a beautiful storm

    seas talking with the ocean,

seen a many things passing, fearful and normal

    never saw this day a-coming.

what If I can’t carry, everything -the world has me buying

what if I’m, running around with my eyes wide open – while others maybe dying

how will I know, I can’t carry this load

how will I know, if I’m half past crazy or its me and the world

one thing I know- I remember those old scriptures

    I remember them well,

“reap what you sow” “God is not the author of fear nor confusion but of love and a sound mind”

so I’m telling myself, get hold of yourself

hold on to your faith and let go of the day.

    hollowed hearts- cry out,

    God we made our mistakes,

    coming closer and closer,

the sky it awakes, turning our faces to you

God- we are turning our faces,

    to you. Amen.

  • Living In Faith Not Fear:

    March 12th, 2020

The truth is, no one should have to walk around in shallow lands. Suffering shoulders to look over. The holes of discomfort growing bolder, the need for respite. To pause and reset.

the earth has its leans, its greens, its means of total upset,

sucking marrow and the bone. The old, and growing, no one knows ” what tomorrow holds”

in faith we pray a better world awaits, and healing blows like the winds.

and healing blows, like the wind.

  • To Be Continued…

    February 28th, 2020

When you soul is weak, and there aren’t enough soft throw pillows or

throwing dirt over the paved highway, which seems to be your life,

    bare-with me God,

    let me humanize my feelings…

  • Having You There Makes the Difference: In other words – We Need You to Imagine…

    February 24th, 2020

Re-imagining myself as a writer, by grace, I am alive. Writing the script of my life -sifting through warm, dark, soil. Tending to the lumps that shape pages, where I’ve been, where I’m headed, how I’m still changing.

    On the morning of discover,

    I am the afro-haired girl

    with friends of freedom,

    we are soulmates,

in good company, we are miracles of change,

aggrandized gold, sprouting through the cracks

bountiful seedlings, dancing across the Alantic,

arising, gas-lighting stars bursting with higher thinking

bursting outside, with ladders of forgiveness.

    kindness is our resource,

    love is, its native power

    hope is our brother

    wisdom is our Mother

riding on the wings of the Cardinal

  • Drawing close to the Spirit… Cry of My Spirit

    January 29th, 2020

The spirit of peace moves, where there is chaos it will cease

The spirit of love moves, where there is hatred it will cease

The spirit of kindness moves, where there suffering it will cease

The spirit of hope moves, where is helplessness it will cease

The spirit of gentleness moves, where there is loss, there will be comfort,

    covering multitudes,

    covering disasters,

    covering failures,

    it moves

    “with healing in its wings”
