  • Wishes for Sons – by Lucille Clifton

    January 26th, 2016

    clifton_custom

    I wish them cramps.
I wish them a strange town
    and the last tampon.
    I wish them no 7-11.

I wish them one week early
    and wearing a white skirt.
I wish them one week late.

later I wish them hot flashes
    and clots like you
    wouldn’t believe. let the
    flashes come when they
    meet someone special.
    let the clots come
    when they want to.

let them think they have accepted
    arrogance in the universe,
    then bring them to gynecologists
    not unlike themselves.

  • Nikky Finney (Quote Challenge)

    January 25th, 2016

    nikkey finney

*In every one of these haunting and hungry poems, Howell draws a map for how to enter the heat and dew of the human being, naked and facing the natural world, desperate to feel. I did not realize while reading Render how deeply I was handing everything over.

*My responsibility as a poet, as an artist, is to not look away.

  • For the Love of it

    January 23rd, 2016

My one wing friend, it was not I but the wind.

From the mighty trees, you rumbled.

My heart has pieces that are no longer here.

You must be insane if you dare to keep flying.

I hear you singing, and flapping about.

    Say it a little more

    I love you.

    Cry if you must,

with no regrets, lest fear tumbled home

And caging chains humbled their bars.

    And mumbling dreams are forgotten.

  • Anointed Flames

    January 21st, 2016

    Pressing elasticity, stripping threads,

    Gently shaping wet paint,

I came up short. Then I learn to stretch out

shiny tin cans, crush them for recycling.

And don’t let anyone, not even me

    Define You. ♥

  • Directions to Peace

    January 16th, 2016

    country-road-covered-dirty-melting-snow-puddles-early-spring-30262065

My voice has joined the heavy cow skins -I can feel the earth. I’ve fought so hard not to fight. And yet this mud is cold. We are sinking and rising until (the earth) has had enough. I was told there are no cures for suffering. Desperate to be good, to be whole, to be found.

  • Visions

    January 15th, 2016

    Philly

I see the ocean, fall –

    in all it’s power.

I see tree roots, singing on their knees.

    I see great wings soar.

I have seen wisdom, sculpt its cooling winds.

I have drawn baths for little dirty children.

And then I see -bottled prayers, visions

    and tears too.♥

  • Ambiance of Love

    January 14th, 2016

    rain walks

    Electrical dreams are manifested,

    Breaking down failures,

    Sprouting in faith-

    We are tiny miracles.

    Over troubled winds –

    Thriving through and through,

The sky will lift her sagging breast.

Tidbits of love will pour out – they’ll say it’s rain.

Sparks of laughter will cry and peace will come again.

  • Nonsense

    January 11th, 2016

    We are trying people

    Trying to help somebody

    Trying to save ourselves

    Trying to better our lives

    Trying to do it right

    Trying to live

Trying not to die too soon

    Trying to be kind

    Trying to resist

    Trying to stand up

    Trying to heal

Yes we are a trying people
